Vinyl Records Skipping or Warped? Fixes to Try

Learn how to diagnose and fix common vinyl record problems like skipping and warping. This guide covers practical steps, from cleaning to storage adjustments, with honest tradeoffs.

Quick answer

Skipping and warping are common vinyl record problems, but many have simple fixes. Start by cleaning the record and checking your turntable setup. For warped records, flattening may work for minor bends, but severe warps often mean replacement.

Why skipping happens (and why it's not always the record)

A skipping record can be frustrating, but the cause isn't always a damaged disc. Often, the issue is a dirty record, a worn stylus, or incorrect tonearm tracking force. A quick clean with a soft, lint-free cloth might be all you need. If skipping persists, check your turntable's anti-skate setting and tracking weight. A worn stylus can also cause skipping, so consider replacing it every 500-1000 hours of play.

If the record itself is warped, even a well-adjusted turntable may struggle. Warping is usually caused by heat or improper storage. Minor warps can sometimes be flattened, but severe warps are permanent. In that case, the best fix is to replace the record.

When to try flattening a warped record

For minor warps that cause a slight wobble but don't affect sound, you can try flattening the record. Place the vinyl between two pieces of glass (or heavy, flat books) and leave it in a warm, dry place for a few days. Avoid direct heat or sunlight, which can cause further damage. This method works best for records with a gentle dish warp, not a severe crease or edge warp.

If the warp is severe or the record has a crease, flattening won't fix it. Playing a severely warped record can damage your stylus and cartridge. In that case, it's safer to replace the record. Consider storing your vinyl vertically in a cool, dry place to prevent future warping.

Diagnosis and fix steps

  • Symptom: Record skips in the same spot: Clean the record with a soft, lint-free cloth (carbon fiber brush or microfiber). If that doesn't help, check for visible scratches or debris in the groove. If clean and unscratched, the issue may be your turntable's tracking force or stylus wear. If cleaning doesn't fix it, inspect the stylus and turntable setup.
  • Symptom: Record has a visible warp: Place the record on a flat surface. If the warp is less than 1/4 inch (6 mm) and not a crease, try flattening between two heavy, flat objects in a warm, dry place for 48-72 hours. If the warp is severe or the record has a crease, do not play it—replace it. Severe warps are not fixable; replace the record to avoid damaging your stylus.
  • Symptom: Record sounds distorted or wobbly: Check if the turntable is level. Use a bubble level on the platter. Also verify the record is properly centered on the spindle. If the sound is still off, the record may have a pressing defect or be damaged beyond repair. If the turntable is level and the record is centered, the distortion is likely permanent.
